INTRODUCTION TO NEXT YEAR’S DRAMA PROGRAM
The Drama Program scheduled for next year will focus on creating a play based on a stimulus: a structured and creative process that enables students to explore themes, develop characters, and craft engaging performances. The course will guide students through the following key stages:
· Understanding the Stimulus: A stimulus is anything that sparks an idea or inspiration, such as a picture, story, object, piece of music, news article, or personal experience. Students will learn to analyze and interpret a chosen stimulus through brainstorming, exploring themes, emotions, and unique perspectives.
· Research & Exploration: To deepen their understanding, students will research the historical, cultural, or social contexts related to their chosen theme and use drama exercises like improvisation and movement.
· Building a Narrative: Students will learn to structure a clear storyline, decide on the genre and style (realism, abstract, physical theatre, etc.), and experiment with dramatic techniques such as flashbacks and ensemble work.
· Refining Scenes: Through rehearsals, students will refine dialogue, movement, and staging, focusing on pacing, tension, and audience engagement.
KEY SKILLS NEEDED
To ensure a smooth and effective learning experience, students need to develop key skills that will allow them to engage fully in the creative process:
· Creativity & Confidence: Developing ideas from a stimulus requires imagination, the courage to take risks, and the patience to refine concepts.
· Brainstorming & Collaboration: Students will learn to conduct effective brainstorming sessions, staying within their theme, actively listening to peers, selecting relevant ideas, and discarding weaker ones.
· Research & Perspective: They will explore different viewpoints and angles to craft unique, compelling narratives that set their stories apart.
· Improvisation & Physicality: Through role-playing, tableau work, and movement-based exercises, students will deepen character development and bring scenes to life.
· Story Structure: They will experiment with different storytelling structures to understand how each choice affects their story’s impact on the audience.
